What is the 16-19 Bursary Fund?
The 16-19 Bursary Fund is designed to help support students who face the greatest financial barriers to continuing in education post 16. There are two types of bursary available to students studying at Heanor Gate Spencer Academy Sixth Form: vulnerable group bursary and discretionary group bursary.
Vulnerable Group Bursary
Students who are in care, are leaving care, are in direct receipt of Income Support or Universal Credit, or are receiving Disability Living Allowance or Personal Independence Payments in their own right as well as Employment and Support Allowance or Universal Credit in their own right are eligible for the vulnerable group bursary fund. This bursary pays up to £1200 per year to eligible students.
Discretionary Group Bursary
Eligibility for the discretionary fund is determined by family income and students in full time education and in households with a total family income under £20,817 will qualify. Once we have confirmed a student’s eligibility, the amount of funding they receive will be allocated according to need. We will assess need based on the number of household dependents and the distance the student travels to attend Sixth Form. Discretionary group bursary payments will be paid retrospectively on a weekly basis. Receipt of the bursary will be conditional on students meeting agreed standards including full attendance, appropriate behaviour and a positive attitude to learning. The discretionary group bursary is designed to help with transport, books and equipment, field trips and other course-related costs. Students eligible for the bursary will also be reimbursed their UCAS application fee should they apply for university during year 13.
Following enrolment into year 12 all students will be provided with a 16-19 bursary fund application form which includes further details. Students must reapply during year 13 to continue to receive the discretionary group bursary. If a student leaves their learning programme or completes their course, they will not be eligible to receive further payment.
