GCSE Results Day 2023

For the second week running, Heanor Gate Spencer Academy’s students have celebrated some fantastic results, this time in both GCSE and level 2 vocational courses.

Mr Jones, Principal, said  ‘I am so proud of all of our amazing students and the grades they have achieved.

This particular set of young people has had a very unique secondary education, spending much of their KS3 studying at home  during the various Covid restrictions. They even selected their GCSE subject options through a virtual process and their positive attitudes, resilience and collective unity make these results even more special.

As I alluded to last week, the political direction of travel was aimed at seeing national outcomes return to pre-pandemic levels. I am delighted to state that our pass rates in English and Maths have not only surpassed the national benchmarks from 2019, but also represent our highest ever combined pass rate at both standard pass (grade 4) and strong pass (grade 5) outside of the process of centre assessed grades issued during the pandemic.

Our outcomes are incredibly strong and really are testament to the collective improvements we have made over recent years. 75% of our students this year will leave us having obtained a pass grade in both GCSE English and GCSE Maths, often seen as the passport to future opportunities for young people. This figure is 12% higher than the last comparable national average back in 2019.

As we often stress, the most important thing with any results day is that our young people secure the outcomes they need to move onto their intended pathway. With the results achieved today, I am confident that every one of our students will be able to continue on to their chosen destination in September. It also looks as though we are currently on track to achieve one of our largest ever cohorts in HGSA Sixth Form, made up of a significant proportion of our own year 11 students and an ever increasing number of students joining us from other secondary schools.

I would once again like to thank all of the incredible staff at our academy that have worked so hard to prepare our students for today. The unwavering commitment  shown towards our students is something that we, as an academy, are extremely proud of. The hours of dedication, not only during the school day, but during countless morning and after school sessions, as well as sessions during the holidays or at weekends, is a reflection of how inspiring and enthusiastic they are.
